--Around 5:15pm Saturday a concerned resident reported hearing someone yelling for help in the area of the Hesitation Wildlife Management area. The Hesitation Wildlife Management area is located in the Bay Lake Township south of State Highway 18 and encompasses much of Rice Lake. Rice Lake is a very shallow swampy lake with limited access to the water. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area. Deputies were able to hear a male yelling for help, but initially were unable to visually locate the male due to the terrain and bulrushes. A Deputy utilized an aerial drone to locate the male. Deputies observed a male in the water holding onto the back of his boat. It appeared the male had been duck hunting. Minnesota DNR Officers also responded to the area and were able to utilize a flat bottom mud boat to navigate the water and to reach the hunter. The hunter was pulled from the water and transported back to land to awaiting Crosby Ambulance paramedics. The hunter was very cold, but was conscious and talking. At this time, it is believed the hunter was in the water for several hours. The hunter was identified as a 60-year old male from the area. Sheriff Scott Goddard would like to thank the residents who initially heard the male calling for help and called 911. Sheriff Goddard also would like to thank the resident who allowed law enforcement to access his property and assisted in launching the rescue boat with his skid steer. Without the help of these residents, the outcome may have been much different.

--At 10:53am Monday the Little Falls Fire Department responded to 833 Buck Lane on a report of a building fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found fire on the exterior of the residence. The fire was contained mainly to the exterior with some minor smoke damage inside the residence. The fire is believed to have been caused by cigarettes discarded in a potted plant. Firefighters cleared the scene in less than one hour. Little Falls Fire Chief Craig Seelen stated “This is a good reminder with this being Fire Prevention Week, smoking materials are the leading cause of fatal fires in Minnesota. If you smoke cigarettes, make sure the butts are extinguished and then discarded in a safe location away from any combustibles. Potted plants are never a safe place to discard cigarettes as much of the soil in plants is not actually dirt. It is more like peat moss and the discarded cigarettes can smolder in the soil and eventually ignite the pot.
