NEWS
--Today marks the 17th Anniversary of the attacks on New York, Washington DC and the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania after being taken over by terrorists. There will be a national moment of silence at 7:46am to remember those who died that day on September 11th, 2001. Events are scheduled around the nation to remember those that perished. It is also considered a day of service to give back to your schools, churches and the community you live in to help others on this day. There are some events locally including a Patriotic Rosary at 12:45pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz where they will pray for all in the United States, leaders and military.

--The Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to an address in Minden Township concerning a person in crisis threatening to harm himself and others. Shortly after noon Sunday, authorities arrived near the Highway 95 and Highway 25 intersection and set up a perimeter where the crisis was taking place. Authorities were told that the man was armed and dangerous and allegedly had pointed a gun at one of his friends to leave the home immediately. Therefore the area was evacuated and traffic was rerouted around Highway 95 and 25. The Stearns-Benton SERT team made extensive attempts to contact the person in crisis, but were unsuccessful. After having exhausted all methods of attempting contact with the person in crisis, entry was made into the residence by the SERT team. The person in crisis was found deceased inside the home. Evidence found at the scene indicated that the victim died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. After ensuring that there were no other threats to the public, area residents were allowed back into their homes and Highway 95 was opened again to traffic. The victim 44-year old Rodolfo Alberto Gomez, Jr. of Sauk Rapids was a military veteran and, according to those closest to him, appeared to fall victim to an acute mental health crisis in the days and hours preceding his death. Gomez’s family hopes that his passing serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health services for veterans experiencing crisis.

--The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a two vehicle crash with injuries Saturday around 8pm when 18-year-old Katharine Kalthoff and her passenger 15-year old Kristine Kalthoff were traveling north bound in Albany Township. Kalthoff was stopped on County Road 10 and waited to make a turn when she was struck from behind by 29-year old Neil Osendorf. Katharine Kaltoff and Kristine Kalthoff, both of Albany sustained non life threatening injuries from the crash. The other driver from St. Joseph was not hurt.

--A 48-year old East Gull Lake man died after the motorcycle he drove collided with a pickup truck Friday afternoon. The Pequot Lakes Police Department said around 3:45pm, the crash occurred when when a pickup turned in front of a motorcycle. The pickup truck, driven by a 69-year old Pine River man, hit the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The names of those involved in the crash were withheld Friday, pending notification of family. Further information will be made available at a later time.

--The 44th Annual Albany Pioneer Days and Threshing Show is this Friday through Sunday in Albany. This year featuring Oliver and Hart Parr, events include parade of tractors, more than 400 tractors on display, lumber mill, farm museum, print shop, country school, blacksmith lessons and more. AM960 KLTF Party Line will be live at the Albany Pioneer Days this Friday at 10am.

--The Morrison County Department of Public Works will be working on replacing deteriorated culverts through County State Aid Highway 1 or Dove Road in preparation of a pavement rehabilitation project next year. The segment of road that will be under construction is from Trunk Highway 27 to County State Aid Highway 14 in Randall. The work will be conducted starting Wednesday through September 20th. The work will take place during daylight hours and the road will be under detour while crews are working on the project.

--The Little Falls Fire Department responded to a car fire on Sunday afternoon. Around 2:15pm Jim Hennis' 1921 Plymouth caught fire from a gas line coming off in the engine compartment near 18th street and Highway 27 in Little Falls. 21-Little Falls fire fighters were on scene for a short period. There were no injuries.

--Brainerd Community Action, in partnership with the Brainerd Jaycees, are accepting nominations for the following Distinguished Service Awards: Outstanding Nonprofit of the Year; Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the Year; Outstanding Citizen of the Year. Letters of nomination should include: The nominee’s occupation, Details of volunteer work and length of service, Office held in organizations, Impact of the nominee’s contributions to the lakes area, Letters of support from organizations that have benefited from their services. Letters should be no longer that 4 pages. Letters of nomination should be submitted by September 21st. --The University of Minnesota Extension will be hosting a Beef Field Day later today at 5:30pm at the Joe and Nancy Berg residence at 10484 170th Avenue in Little Falls. The free event offers local producers and agribusinesses a chance to learn from extension educators, agricultural professional and farmers hosting the event.

--A Paynesville man has pleaded guilty to felony assault after a fight last fall which left another man with serious injuries. 38-year-old Justin Brown pleaded guilty to one count of 1st-degree assault-great bodily harm. A witness says he saw a man on the ground with Brown punching and kicking him. Authorities arrived to find Brown standing over the man who was unconscious and bleeding from his head. Records show the victim had a large cut to one of his ears, causing it to become significantly detached. Brown told investigators there was a fight, but he was acting in self defense. Brown will be sentenced October 22nd and faces over 6 years in prison.
