--Two Brainerd men were injured when their vehicles collided at 10:54am Monday at South Sixth and Willow streets in Brainerd. The Brainerd Police Department reported Tyler T. Scull, 34, was driving east on Willow Street, stopping for the stop sign at the intersection of South Sixth Street. Scull then proceeded to travel east through the intersection, striking on the driver’s side a vehicle driven by Anthony E. Veith, 60. Veith had the right of way and stated he never saw the other vehicle coming, police reported. Scull admitted to driving through the intersection and stated he did not see the second vehicle. Scull was treated on scene and released and Veith was transported to Brainerd hospital for their injuries.

--An Elk River man was arrested after admitting to authorities he threw dozens of screws on several Sherburne County roads. Sheriff Joel Brott says they received a tip Monday morning of a vehicle near Zimmerman Terrace mobile home park matching the description of a vehicle Big Lake police had identified as being involved in the incidents. The caller said the vehicle had made a couple of trips through the park and the activity appeared suspicious. Deputies stopped the vehicle, driven by 63-year old Jeffery Caouette, at Fremont Avenue and 10th Street in Zimmerman minutes after the caller reported the sighting. Authorities says Caouette admitted having screws in his vehicle, including a five-pound box, and to throwing the screws on various roadways numerous times. Big Lake police say they have a many as 150 reports of tires being damaged by screws or of screws being found on the roads in the last two months. Caouette was arrested and awaiting formal charges.

--A St. Cloud woman was taken to the hospital after driving into a utility pole Monday morning near Kimball. The incident happened just after 7am near Dairywood Road in Maine Prairie Township. Authorities say 37-year-old Tansy Sayre was heading north, delivering newspapers, when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole. Sayre was taken to St. Cloud hospital for her injuries.

--Two people suffered injuries when the motorcycle they were on crashed at 1:34pm Saturday on Nokay Lake and Division roads in Brainerd. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office reported a motorcycle driven by Kim B. Mahle, 63, who had a passenger, Barbara D. Mahle, 57, both of Ironton, was on Nokay Lake Road with a large group of other motorcycles. When the group came to a stop, Kim Mahle braked and lost control, skidding on the road. The operator and passenger were transported to the Brainerd hospital.

--The Minnesota Department of Human Services says it must repay the federal government an estimated $48 million that it paid to ineligible chemical dependency treatment providers. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ordered the state in May to cease the payments to as many as 100 inpatient providers classified as institutions for mental diseases.'' It said Medicaid money generally can't be used for treatment in such facilities. It ordered repayment but didn't specify a dollar amount. On Monday, the Department of Human Services said the estimated cost to the state will be $48 million. That's on top of the $25 million the agency overpaid to two tribes for substance abuse treatment under Medicaid. Altogether, the errors will cost the state $73 million.

--The 2020 Farmer's Almanac is predicting for the upcoming winter and very frigid and snowy winter season for the upper Midwest. However the Old Farmer's Almanac says just the opposite.

--The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a hit and run accident. On August 22nd around 6:00pm the Benton County Sheriff’s Office received the report of a two vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of 65th St NE and 55th Ave NE in Mayhew Lake Township. Investigating deputies arrived on the scene and found a pickup truck and travel trailer rolled over on the roadway and in the south ditch of 65th St NE. Deputies made contact with the driver of the pickup, 55-year old Thomas Stang of Sartell, and his passenger, 53-year old Dawn Stang of Sartell. Deputies learned that Thomas Stang had been driving eastbound when he observed an older blue or green 4 door Toyota sedan approaching the intersection northbound. Stang would have had the right of way at the intersection. Stang told deputies that the passenger car failed to stop at the stop sign, slid through the intersection, and collided with the travel trailer attached to Stang’s vehicle. Stang’s truck and trailer rolled over, with the trailer coming to rest on the roadway and the truck stopping in the ditch. The Toyota sedan also left the roadway and came to rest in the road ditch. As the Stangs exited their vehicle, the Toyota sedan worked free from the ditch and fled the scene going northbound on 55th Ave NE. The Stangs suffered non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating what is believed to be a blue or green 1992-94 Toyota Camry. The suspect vehicle should have significant front driver’s side damage. The suspect driver in this accident is described as a white male who appeared to be less than 40 years old. Anyone with information about this crime or the suspect is asked to contact the Benton County Sheriff’s Office at (320) 968-7201.

--The final Cone Zone Summer Block Party for the year is Thursday night from 6-10pm in front of Tourright Bicycle Shop near the downtown area of Little Falls. With Highway 27 east open this will make the event more spacious for many to come and take part. Music from Jeff Engholm, obstacle course for the kids and the charm ride drawing for a new bike all part of the event on Thursday in Little Falls. There will be a meeting in September to discuss the possibility of bringing back the block parties in 2020.
