NEWS
--A 61-year-old Emily man and a 58-year-old Las Vegas man died Sunday after the plane they were in crashed near Emily in Crow Wing County. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a plane that had taken off but had not arrived at its destination at 6:44pm near Minnie Lake Drive, north of Emily. According to the report, the sheriff’s office and the drone team, Crosslake Police Department, Emily Fire Department, and Lifelink III, all began searching the area. The plane was located in a wooded area near Minne Lake Drive. The pilot, Douglas Johnson, 61, and his passenger, Lee Cemensky, 58, were deceased at the site. The sheriff’s office described the plane as being of a lightweight design.
The crash is currently under investigation by the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

--An early morning crash caused a power outage in western Stearns County. The Sheriff's Office says the incident happened at about 12:15am Monday on County Road 185 about 2 1/2 miles east of Sauk Centre. 37-year-old Teresa Focier of Sauk Center was heading west when a deer came out of the ditch. She swerved to avoid the deer and went into the ditch severing a power pole. She was not hurt in the crash. Multiple residents in that area were without power for a short period until it was restored by Stearns Electric.

--A Pennock man was injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Brooten. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says they received a call at 9:06am Saturday and deputies responded to a report of a crash at Roe Street and Eastern Avenue South in Brooten. Officials say 66-year-old Gerald Hesse of Watkins was driving a semi loaded with sweet corn. Forty-three-year-old Jason Arends of Pennock failed to stop at a stop sign and hit the semi’s trailer. Arends was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

--The Brainerd Fire Department had a busy weekend. They responded to a vehicle fire at 11:30pm Friday at Highway 25 and Russell Lake Road for a vehicle fire. Fire crews extinguished the fire. There were no injuries. On Sunday during the day they had a number of false for alarms that were determined in one case to be burnt food, another as a maintenance matter and a third of a gas smell that had ceased before they arrived on scene. They remind residents to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly. Though the calls were mostly minor in nature if you are not sure of a smoke or gas smell situation contact your local law enforcement or firefighters to investigate.

--Department of Public Safety reminding motorists that extra law enforcement will be on roadways this weekend watching for speeding and impaired drivers. Make it a safe Labor Day Holiday Weekend.

--The 69th Princess Kay of the Milky Rachel Rynda of Montgomery was on KLTF Tuesday morning. She is passionate about promoting the dairy industry this year next year. Her first two days were in the butter booth with new Butter Sculptor Gerry Kulzer of Litchfield who has ties to Morrison County from his wife and her family. She will be at the Minnesota State Fair through Labor Day greeting and speaking to many about her goals as Princess Day. After that she will start her second year of college at University of Wisconsin/River Falls in working with agriculture and finance for her goal to help dairy farmers. She also has big plans for her butter sculpture using the shavings for Christmas baking with her family and next year having a big outdoor movie night using her butter head for the popcorn to eat.

--Minnesota Department of Transportation reported that Highway 27 at the railroad tracks through Little Falls will experience a short-term detour as crews close and repair the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway crossing, west of the Mississippi River, between Paul Larson Memorial Drive and Lindbergh Drive. That will begin today and the work is expected to be completed on Thursday. Highway 27 will have a detour along Paul Larson Memorial Drive to Ninth Avenue Northwest and then Lindbergh Drive in Little Falls. Crews will make repairs within the railroad crossings. --Vern Capelle, Superintendent of Upsala Area Schools spoke on KLTF Tuesday. Capelle stated that Upsala is ready for another school year and already many students in athletics, FFA, Robotics, performances and other programs have been using the school facility or going out promoting their items from the Upsala schools. There has been some work inside the building mostly floor stripping to look better this year also a new playground outside school was set up this for the younger students to use. Capelle said this year is the 100th Anniversary of the first graduating class in Upsala which happened in June 1923. He said they are in the early stages of planning a large celebration and events through the school year to remember 100 years of graduating classes in Upsala. --A farming accident has claimed the life of a Sauk Centre man. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to a medical emergency at the intersection of County Road 17 and 360th Avenue in Melrose Township, about three miles North of Melrose Monday afternoon. 76-year-old Michael Zirbes was climbing off of a piece of farm machinery in an alfalfa field when he fell about five or six feet to the ground. Zirbes was treated at the scene and then sent to Melrose Hospital by ambulance where he died of his injuries.

--former Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev has died at age 91. He worked along with President Ronald Reagan in ending the Cold War.

U.S. OPEN= U.S. Open continues in tennis in New York, Serena Williams won first match Monday. She had earlier announced she is retiring from professional tennis at end of this season.
