NEWS
--At 10:41pm Monday night a fire was reported at the Borgstrom House in Upsala located at 113 Main Street North in Upsala. The Upsala Fire Department responded and was able to contain the fire to the attic area and put the fire out. According to a board member of the museum, Walter Edin, an estimated 80% of antiques were saved. The house was unoccopied and there were no injuries. The State Fire Marshal has been called in to help in the fire investigation.

--At 6:47am Monday the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one vehicle accident with injuries on Dove Road near 330th Street, in Scandia Valley Township. 19-year-old Megan Mohler of Little Falls was traveling north on Dove Road when she lost control of her vehicle in a sharp curve, went off the roadway and hit a tree. Mohler was transported to a Brainerd hospital with unknown injuries.

--At 6:32pm Saturday the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an ATV crash with injuries on 50th Avenue, north of 20th Street, approximately one mile south of Upsala in Elmdale Township. 17-year old Matthew Holt of Holdingford, was traveling north on 50th Avenue on an ATV. Holt lost control of his ATV, went into the ditch and rolled. Holt was Life Linked to a hopsital with his injuries.

--One person was injured Tuesday at 11:01am on Highway 10 in Cushing Township of Morrison County. 70-year-old Kathleen Larsen of Rochester lost control on the wet roadway, went off the road and struck some trees. Larsen was taken to the hospital in Little Falls with reported non life threatening injuries. A passenger, 21-year old Jewell Larsen of Rochester was not injured in the crash.

--Minnesota 8th Congressional District Representative Pete Stauber will be in Little Falls on Thursday at 2:30pm. Representative Stauber is delivering books from the Library of Congress to Morrison County United Way (MCUW) to be used in local library collections. This is part of the Library of Congress Surplus Books Program that is available to eligible non-profits who apply for the program. With guidance from Rep. Stauber’s office, MCUW felt the program fit well with their focus on literacy and applied to the program. Representative Stauber’s office requested and selected the books to be given to MCUW and took a very active role in this opportunity. There will be about 90 books ranging from children to adult selections including some workbooks. All books are in new condition. Morrison County United Way is working with Coborn’s of Little Falls and the Little Falls Great River Regional Library location to provide free root beer floats to event attendees which will take place on the front lawn at the Little Falls Library on Thursday, July 8th at 2:30pm. Books will be used in a number of ways with MCUW distributing them to libraries in Morrison County. Any library including local schools, little library boxes or senior centers that would like to be considered for distribution now or in the future are asked to reach out to Meghann Boser at Morrison County United Way at 320-632-5102.

--A pole shed was destroyed in a fire near Richmond on Saturday. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a call about several burning hay bales and a possible building fire in the 23,000 block of 178th Avenue in Wakefield Township around 11am. Authorities say the homeowner, 47-year-old Charles Schmitz, was not home when the fire started. The 30-by-40 foot shed had a roof but no side walls, and contained around 40 bales of straw and 110 bales of hay cut and baled three weeks ago. No one was hurt, and the fire did not spread to any other structures. The hay, straw, and pole shed are considered a complete loss.

--Little Falls School Superintendent Stephen Jones stated yesterday on Little Falls Radio he will remain on for at least the next school year at Superintendent who had thought of retirement earlier this year after all the issues in the past 18 months for schools and the community. The school board and Jones worked out a 1 year deal last Friday and Jones will be posting a video on his thoughts and the ideas for the upcoming school year with the hopes of bringing more normalcy to the district, staff, students and parents.

--The Brainerd Police Department announced Tuesday they have identified the 66-year-old man killed from a moving train in Brainerd on July 1st as Charles Leroy Mass of Brainerd. The police department said this is still an active investigation and final autopsy is pending.

--A wildfire apparently sparked by fireworks left charring on pine trees across the road from the East Gull Lake City Hall Monday. Pillager Fire Chief Greg Ringler described as the drought-like conditions, scorching July heat and wind direction prompted concern the fire might push into nearby Gull Lake Resort on Gull Lake Dam Road, requiring evacuation but that threat never materialized. Less than a quarter-acre ultimately burned before it was controlled. The timing of the fire called in at 11:48am also might have contributed to the perception it was more serious than it was. At the same time, the DNR was conducting proficiency testing on some of its aerial firefighting equipment just to the west for their fast assistance.

--Two people were hurt in a single-vehicle crash near Avon Sunday. The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 9 and Narnia Lane. The driver, 22-year old Cody Tibbetts of Sartell lost control and tried to regain control of the SUV, an overcorrection caused the rollover. One passenger, 26-year old Summer Pramann of Avon had non-life-threatening injuries. Tibbetts was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries. A second passenger in the SUV was not hurt.

--Authorities are investigating a crash that sent a Kimball man to the hospital Saturday. The incident happened around 10pm at the intersection of County Road 44 and County Road 144 in Lynden Township east of Fairhaven. The driver, 35-year-old Joseph Cleveland of Kimball, was pinned inside the vehicle with serious injuries. He was removed from the truck and air-lifted to the hospital.

--A television may be to blame for a house fire in New Munich. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office got a call about a fire at about 2:45am Sunday. The caller said the TV appeared to be smoking and may have been on fire. The initial information from the caller was that two people were outside the home but there was still a man sleeping inside. By the time deputies arrived the man had gotten out safely.
