--The City of St. Cloud could be the next city to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21. The city has set a public hearing for October 9th to discuss the issue. St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis says he doesn’t support the measure for a variety of reasons. Kleis says it would only prevent people ages 18 to 21 from buying tobacco not using it. He also thinks it’s a state issue, not a city one. In May, Edina adopted an ordinance restricting the sale of tobacco and tobacco related products to people under the age of 21. In late August Dr. Julie Anderson and representatives from the CentraCare Health Foundation organization, Crave the Change, gave a presentation outlining their recommendation that the joint area cities of St. Cloud, St. Augusta, St. Joseph, Sauk Rapids, Waite Park and Sartell each adopt an ordinance prohibiting the sale of tobacco and tobacco related products to persons under the age of 21. A Republican lawmaker introduced a bill during the last session to raise the state’s law to a minimum of 21 years old, but that failed to get a floor vote.

--A St. Cloud woman faces DWI and driving after revocation charges after calling police to report an assault that never happened. St. Cloud police were called to 1607 West St. Germain Street just after 3:30am Wednesday. An officer spoke with 28-year old Kristine Hadammek who allegedly had poor balance and slurred speech. She told police she had an argument with her husband at a Sauk Rapids bar and that he left with the vehicle. Hadammek said she eventually walked to the Sauk Rapids Bridge where her husband had left the vehicle and drove it home. During the investigation, the officer learned an assault hadn’t happened, but rather Hadammek had fallen while walking and injured her eye. Court records show a breath test at the scene showed Hadammek’s blood alcohol level 0.208, more than twice the legal limit to drive. Hadammek has a previous DWI conviction from June and her driver’s license is still revoked as part of that conviction. She is now charged with 3rd degree DWI, 2nd degree DWI and driving after revocation.
