The director of the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom program has been awarded by the state’s two predominant farm organizations for his dedication and service to Minnesota agriculture, the state’s farmers, and rural communities. Al Withers received the Minnesota Farm Bureau’s 2015 Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award and the Minnesota Farmers Union 2015 Dedicated Service Award during the groups’ annual meetings this past weekend. Withers is a long-time advocate of agricultural literacy having begun his 30-year career with the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) program in 1985. In that time, he’s helped introduce the popular AgMag and AgMag Junior student publications. The program has continually expanded, in part due to his work to promote agricultural, food, and natural resources education. “Al Withers is why the Minnesota Ag in the Classroom program is the success it is today,” said Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson. “We’ve been fortunate to have a director as passionate about ag literacy as Al has been throughout his career.” The Minnesota Ag in the Classroom Program is celebrating its 30 year anniversary and Withers will be retiring from the program in 2016.
