The man who shot an Aitkin County sheriff’s deputy Sunday at St. Cloud Hospital and then died afterward was facing seven felonies and had a warrant out for his arrest at the time. 50-year old Danny Leroy Hammond was charged October 12th in Aitkin County with kidnapping, second-degree assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and domestic assault. Investigators stated that Hammond forced his wife to eat rat poison at gunpoint. Hammond apparently attempted suicide on the same day charges were filed in Aitkin County and that is when he was taken to St. Cloud Hospital and put in the critical care unit. Deputy Steve Sandberg was shot when Hammond got out of his bed around 5:15am Sunday and initiated a struggle, took Sandberg’s gun, and shot him. Hammond was tased by a hospital employee and later died from what hospital personnel called a emergency medical condition.
