A child is critically ill after developing a rare and severe brain infection while swimming in central Minnesota. The child who was swimming at Lake Minnewaska in Pope County south of Alexandria first suffered fever, nausea and vomiting then started suffering seizures. The infection known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis is found in freshwater and soil and can enter through the nose in humans in very rare cases. In the past 5 years there have not been two other cases in Minnesota. The Department of Health stated Tuesday that the infection is not contracted by drinking the water from a lake and is mainly found in warmer waters and Minnesota cases are very rare and the public should be alarmed. The Health Department would not state who the boy is nor would they elaborate on his condition.
