FSIS proposal extends livestock abuse responsibility

Thursday, October 13th 2016

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service plans to hold transportation companies and their employees responsible for the abuse of livestock during loading and unloading of vehicles. The FSIS proposal was published in the Federal Register last Friday. Under the current system,  only farm operators and slaughterhouses can be held responsible in those circumstances. The North American Meat Institute is holding a meeting today about the proposal. The animal rights group HSUS reportedly says it falls short because it does not include chickens. A 90-day public comment period began Friday.
