A Stearns County judge has ruled that 53-year old Dean Friese is competent to stand trial on charges that he killed his mother in September 2013 at a St. Cloud apartment building where both lived. The judge on Tuesday heard testimony via interactive television from the psychologist in St. Peter who examined Friese three times and found him competent twice. His next court appearance is scheduled for October. Friese is charged with first- and second-degree murder. He is accused of killing 72-year old Lois Arlene Omeara who lived in the same apartment building as Friese. The charges accuse Friese of luring his mother to his apartment unit, stabbing her and then calling 911 to report the stabbing. Friese has a history of mental illness that has led to several commitments and the court-ordered administration of medication. Court records show Friese has been violent toward family members before due to his mental illness problems.
