NEWS
–Charges have been filed in a burglary/theft ring in Baxter though the suspect has not been arrested. As of Friday morning, Baxter police filed criminal charges against a suspect that police say is responsible for multiple thefts to vehicles from January 12th through the 18th in the Knollwood Drive and Mountain Ash areas of Baxter. Police say they know who the suspect is but would not release the name of the suspect who has a warrant out for their arrest.

–Authorities Thursday released all the names of the men found inside a fish house on Leech Lake that left one of them dead. 34-year-old Jared Johnson of Akeley was dead when authorities arrived. 50-year-old Michael Tatreau of Solway was taken to an area hospital then to the Twin Cities where he was upgraded to satisfactory condition late Thursday. Two others 60-year-old Martin Hartmann of Walker and 43-year-old Scott Hoff of Akeley were treated at the scene by first responders and then released. Cass County reported that carbon monoxide was to blame from propane devices used to heat the camper trailer that had been converted into a fish house.

–A St. Cloud woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving after she was involved in a collision that injured six other people. 30-year old Jolene Frisbie pulled onto Minnesota Highway 25 shortly before 4:00pm as a van, driven by 30-year-old Amber Hagen of Becker, had to move into the left lane to avoid a collision with Frisbie. Authorities say Frisbie then attempted a U-turn and struck the right front of the van. Hagen and her five passengers were taken to St. Cloud Hospital with injuries the State Patrol did not consider life-threatening. Frisbie was also taken to St. Cloud Hospital, and then was booked at Sherburne County Jail. The State Patrol report says alcohol was detected in her system.

–Brainerd firefighters responded to a vehicle fire around 6am Thursday on Laurel Street. The vehicle engine was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The vehicle sustained moderate damage. There were no injuries reported.

–A mobile home burned Friday morning in Sartell, trapping a homeowner inside until police helped him escape through a window. Firefighters were dispatched to 338 Sunset Avenue shortly after 8:00am. The home was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived and the homeowner was attempting to escape. Sartell police officers broke a window at the rear of the house and helped the man out after a few minutes. The man had been sleeping and was awakened up by his fire alarm. The man was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for precautionary reasons. By 9:00am no flames were visible but firefighters were spraying a hose through a hole burned in the side of the residence, and smashing windows to let air blow through. No cause has been determined. The home appears to be a total loss.

–Governor Mark Dayton has named Appeals Court Judge Margaret Chutich to the Minnesota Supreme Court. Chutich is openly gay, which makes her the first such justice on the high court. Chutich succeeds Wilhelmina Wright, another Dayton appointee who was confirmed to a federal judgeship this week. It’s Dayton’s fourth pick since he took office in 2011. Earlier this year, he tapped Appeals Judge Natalie Hudson to replace the retiring Justice Alan Page. He’s also appointed attorney and Democratic party ally David Lillehaug to the bench. The seven-member court has three Dayton appointees.

–Heartland Symphony Orchestra is hosting a fundraiser with Chinese/Taiwanese food and great music at the AT Black and White on Sunday 31st at 3pm. Tickets $40 call 800-826-1997 for info.

–The Morrison County Commissioners announced they have voted to have the old Boys and Girls Club building at 303 Broadway East demolished at the cost of $65,000. Items that remain that can be salvaged will be put up for public auction with one of the light fixtures being donated to Linden Hill. The Board decided that due to water damage and other repairs it would be too costly to repair the building to be liveable again and that demolition was the best cause.

–Two people were killed Friday around 12:20pm on Highway 210 west of Baxter in Cass County. The State Patrol stated that 66-year-old Marilyn Rich of Fargo was heading east on 210 when a vehicle driven by 51-year-old James Freeman of Brainerd suddenly crossed the center line and struck the Rich vehicle head on. Both drivers were dead when authorities arrived. A passenger in Rich’s vehicle 81-year-old Gene Rich was airlifted from the scene to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale with serious injuries.

–The Central Minnesota Violent Offenders Task Force and St. Cloud SWAT personnel arrested man on Benton County’s most-wanted list Thursday afternoon. 33-year old Maurice Calvin Brown of St. Cloud, was arrested without incident. Brown has a history of violent crimes and he was wanted on felony warrants for his arrest when he was spotted Thursday going into a home in the vicinity of Seventh Street South and Washington Memorial Drive. Brown was taken to Stearns County Jail to answer warrants for controlled substance, two counts of fifth-degree assault, driving after revocation and disorderly conduct. Earlier this month Brown was on Benton County’s most-wanted list. He has a history of arrests on suspicion of making terroristic threats and domestic assault in Sherburne County. He has been booked into Stearns County Jail 15 times in the past 11 years.

–Three people were seriously injured Friday around 5:00pm on Highway 169 in Mille Lacs County. 46-year-old John Mojica of Onamia was attempting to pass a vehicle and collided with a pickup. The pickup had moved into the right shoulder but was unable to avoid the collision. The pickup then ended up rolling into the ditch. Mojica and his 14 year old passenger had non-life threatening injuries. The three in the pickup had to be taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Though the names were not released the State Patrol later learned that two of the three had to be airlifted to the Twin Cities.
