--Crow Wing County Sheriff Erik Klang is sending out information on three types of scams that have been circulating the Brainerd Lakes Area and beyond recently. Their office continues to see and receive reports of scams and “phishing” attempts in a variety of methods and techniques daily. Phishing (as in “fishing for information”) is a scam in which fraudsters send email messages to trick unsuspecting victims into revealing personal and financial information that can be used to steal the victims’ identities. Tax Season Scams with callers say they are from the IRS or other groups asking that you are in violation or need assistance to finish tax return info, do not fall for these scams. Tech support scams are up recently callers say they can fix your computer and remove viruses they use sneaky tactics to get your information and use names of well known companies on your phones to make it sound legit but they are not. They might even ask you to g to a website to verify the information, the website could also be false and a scam if you not did not call a company on a computer questions do not give out info if they call you. The last is romance scams with social networking sites and online dating apps many younger individuals are being scams by these. Again teach teens and pre-teens with phones to watch for these type of scams. Klang said the more prepared we are for these type of scams the better we can protect ourselves and stop these type of scams in the area.
