NEWS
–An accident Saturday morning on Highway 371 at Koering Road in Crow Wing County sent three to the hospital including a 5 year old from Little Falls. Around 9:50am, 39-year-old Jeffrey Budnick of Little Falls was on Highway 371 when a westbound vehicle driven by 65-year-old Judy Waters of Sartell apparently ran a stop sign and hit the Budnick vehicle broadside. Both drivers and 5-year-old Carson Budnick of Little Falls were taken to the hospital with what the state patrol ruled as non-life threatening injuries.

–A fatal accident occurred Saturday around 2:45am in Cass County. The State Patrol reported the accident on Highway 371 north of Pine River when the driver hit a sign and rolled multiple times down into the ditch. The driver, 42-year-old Michael D. Kelly of Pine River was ejected from the vehicle and died at scene.

–Volunteers searching Sunday afternoon for a missing 24-year-old St. Cloud man found the body of a deceased adult male. The Wright County sheriff reported the body was discovered in a marsh south of Interstate Highway 94 near Dalton Avenue in Monticello. It was located by volunteers from United Legacy Search, Rescue & Recovery, who had been searching the area for Tyler Berg. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy and making an identification. On Sunday, volunteers combed woods and fields in search of Berg, who has been missing for a week. All-terrain vehicles, mounted patrols, aerial drones and searchers on foot scoured an ever-growing area around Monticello for any traces of Berg. It was the third full day of the search, which had drawn hundreds of people wanting to help in trying to find Berg.

–The Brainerd fire department was called Thanksgiving night around 8:00pm on Woida Road to a chimney fire. When they arrived the homeowner had started pouring water down the chimney to control the fire. Crews cleaned out the chimey and fire box to assure the fire was out. There was no structure damage. The fire was contained to the chimney with some minor smoke damage around the fireplace.

–A Verndale man led authorities in a high speed chase on Wednesday afternoon. Todd County alerted Otter Tail County of a vehicle pursuit around 2:00pm that started near Eagle Bend when a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding but the driver refused to stop and sped off. Reportedly speeds exceeded 80 miles per hour into Otter Tail County. The driver, 25-year-old Wade Moenkedick of Verndale was finally stopped when his vehicle collided with a squad car on State Highway 78 causing the suspect’s vehicle to end up in a field off the road. The driver was not injured and taken into custody facing multiple charges. Three squad cars were damaged during the pursuit on Wednesday.

–A Little Falls man was injured when the vehicle he was driving turned in front of a semi Wednesday around 5:20pm north of Little Falls. 82-year old Emil Groth was in a pickup on the side of Ginger Road, north of 175th Street, when a semi driven by 66-year old Walton Kjeldergaard of Cushing, approached and moved to the left lane to avoid the truck. The pickup truck suddenly turned to cross the road and was hit by the semi. Groth was trapped inside his vehicle and needed to be extricated by firefighters. Groth was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of injuries.

–Stearns County deputies investigated a stabbing that occurred early Thursday morning. Around 2:45am, deputies were called to St. Cloud Hospital for a report of a man with stab wounds. Justin Kunkel reported to hospital staff that the assault occurred at a residence on the south side of Pearl Lake, in Maine Prairie Township. Further investigation revealed that Kunkel’s father had picked him up at the scene and brought him to the hospital. Kunkel’s father was able to lead deputies to the assault location on Co. Rd. 8. Several males found in the residence were questioned about the incident. Witnesses said Jon Gately and Justin Kunkel were arguing. At some  point in the argument Gately pulled a folding knife from his pocket. Kunkel ran towards Gately and tackled him. The two fell to the ground with Kunkel receiving several stab wounds. Jon Gately was subsequently arrested and is being held pending court appearance on assault charges. The incident remains under investigation. There was no further report on Kunkel’s condition.

–Area emergency personnel are warning about the dangers of thin ice after a close call near Pillager. On Thursday, Pillager firefighters responded to an ice skater that went through the ice on Lace Placid, a reservoir of the Crow Wing River west of Pillager. The man was able to pull himself from the icy waters before help arrived. Authorities are reminding those that at least 4 inches of ice thickness is needed to walk on area lakes, five inches for snowmobiles and nearly a foot before any vehicles can go on the ice. The ice is beginning to freeze over but many bays and riverbeds remain very thin.

–The Minnesota Farmers Union held its 74th annual state convention on Saturday and Sunday, November 21-22. Delegates were chosen to represent Minnesota Farmers Union at the National Farmers Union convention which will be held March 5-8, 2016 in Bloomington.
