–The St. Cloud man who was missing for almost a week before his body was found in late November near Monticello died from exposure to the cold associated with methamphetamine intoxication, according to an autopsy by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office. 24-year old Tyler Anthony Berg had apparently relapsed into drug use before leaving a halfway house November 22nd in east St. Cloud. Wright County Sheriff’s Office investigators tried to find out who provided the meth to Berg that led to his death, because that person or persons could have been charged with third-degree murder. However authorities were unable to identify who provided the drugs. Medical examiners ruled Berg’s death an accident, and the case is closed.

–A Stearns County judge has denied a motion to dismiss a first-degree murder indictment against a St. Cloud man accused of killing his mother more than two years ago. Attorneys for 54-year old Dean Friese had asked that the indictment be dismissed and that certain evidence be suppressed, including parts of a statement he gave to police and DNA taken from him after he was arrested. Stearns County District Court Judge Frank Kundrat denied the motions and set a hearing for Tuesday. No trial date has been set for Friese, who has been in custody since the September 2013 death of his mother who he is accused of stabbing.

–Retiring Central Lakes College President Larry Lundblad announced Tuesday that he is going into politics and will run for the District 9A House of Representatives seat in St. Paul. Lundblad announced his official running one day after Representative Mark Anderson announced he would not seek reelection this November for the seat which represents portions of Wadena, Cass and Todd Counties. Lundblad will continue his duties until his retirement is official in June at Central Lakes College with campuses in Brainerd and Staples.

–The DNR announced Tuesday they will experimentally stock Mille Lacs Lake with walleye this spring. After the ice-out later this year the lake will be stocked with 10 million and 20 million eggs together from the hatchery in St. Paul where the fertilized eggs will be nurtured, marked and then put back into the lake immediately after they hatch. By tracking the fish spawn on Mille Lacs from the beginning they hope to understand better how many wild baby fish are produced in the lake. The DNR said this is not a cure all for lakes where the population has decreased like Mille Lacs but a hope for bettering the future. Another meeting will be held on February 24th at Izaty’s on Highway 169. That meeting begins at 5:30pm and will dicuss the 2016 open water fishing regulations for later this year.

–U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar stated in an interview Tuesday that she is not seeking the justice position on the U.S. Supreme Court following the death of Antonin Scalia. She said her first job is to continue working for Minnesota in the U.S. Senate. However, Klobuchar said if nominated by the President or whoever does that process for the new justice, she would be flattered for the opportunity and would have a hard time rejecting it.

–The Brainerd City Council Tuesday did not adopt the resolution on airport security with Crow Wing County. The resolution adopted by Crow Wing County would pay the city $12,000 annually through 2020 for security of flight at the airport. Instead the city made their own resolution stating that the agreement only be good until end of this year and stipulate that the county cover half of the security not covered by the TSA grant. The council would then bring up the issue again later this year to discuss the budget for it instead of just going into a full contract with the county on airport security.

–A Crosby man has been charged of fondeling a 12-year old girl. Police arrested 27-year-old Gage Sargent after he was found laying on the ground Thursday and mumbling incoherently. Police stated he was under the influence of alcohol. Officers learned of an active warrant out for him in 2015 for disorderly conduct. While in custody a male and three juvelines informed officers that Sargant had entered their home in Crosby and made sexual contact with one of them in their bedroom. He was charged Friday with second degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim under 13 and that carries a maximum 25 years in jail and $35,000 in fines. He also faces other charges from outstanding warrants and a false imprisonment charge. Sargant has served multiple jail sentences for convictions dating back to 2008.

–The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office received information on Friday about individuals breaking into fish houses on Rice Lake. The complainant advised that someone attempted to break into his fish house and believed the suspect(s) were still on the lake. Law Enforcement made contact with two juvenile males in a portable fish house on the lake.  The deputy noticed numerous items believed to be stolen from other fish houses on the lake near the portable fish house the juveniles were using.  An adult male, the father to one of the juveniles was also located on the lake and is believed to be involved. During the investigation, deputies located several fish houses on the lake that had been forcibly entered.  It was believed that property located in the possession of the juveniles was stolen from these fish houses. The suspected stolen property was collected by deputies and is being held pending owner notification.  The case is still under investigation by the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.
