NEWS
–Police identified a man found dead in his St. Cloud home Monday as 66-year-old Jeffrey Eugene Schilling. Schilling’s daughter, 38-year-old Lisa May Kearney, was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky, in connection with his death. She could be charged with second-degree murder. Police responded to a welfare check around 3:00pm Monday and found Schilling dead in his home. They began searching for Kearney, who they originally described as “missing.” According to the criminal complaint against Kearney: A neighbor called police because he saw Schilling lying on a couch with a blanket over his head, not moving. Police responded and saw blood pooling near Schilling’s head, with blood splatter on the wall and ceiling near his body. A maul was propped against a wall nearby. Kearney was a co-resident at her father’s house. Police established she had a “strained” relationship with Schilling. Schilling’s tablet, wallet, keys and vehicle were missing. Kearney was not there. The neighbor told police he had last talked to Schilling, and last seen his vehicle, on January 1st. The vehicle was found Tuesday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Kearney was found in Louisville on Tuesday in possession of Schilling’s wallet, keys and tablet. She was arrested.

–Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch announced Tuesday that the county has signed a contract with Morrison County to board 15 Cass County prisoners per day at the jail for $50 per day per bed. The contract is for six months and can be renewed. Burch said that the prisoners have been boarded in Cass County with not a lot of room since last summer. At that time Morrison County did not have the room so Cass worked with Mille Lacs County but they also became full and Cass County needed to work out another agreement. The agreement with Morrison County also means that 40 beds in Cass County have been guaranteed to Crow Wing County for the same daily rate.

–The city of Cold Spring’s insurance provider has paid $7,500 to former police chief candidate Eric Johnson to settle his lawsuit against the city. The city’s insurer has waived its request for costs in the case, and Johnson has waived his right to pursue either post-trial motions or an appeal. The payment ends a legal battle that lasted 19 months and included a jury verdict for Johnson of $76,966 that later was overturned by the trial judge. Johnson sued the city in May 2014, accusing it of breach of contract and four other claims for offering him the police chief’s job and then reneging on the offer. Stearns County District Court Judge John Scherer dismissed three of the claims before trial and entered judgment in favor of the city on a fourth claim during a trial in August. A jury found for Johnson on the remaining claim of promissory estoppel. That claim alleged that the city promised Johnson the police chief’s job, that he relied on that promise to quit his job as Minneota police chief and that his reliance on Cold Spring’s offer was to his detriment when he was not hired.
