NEWS
–A 22-month-old boy from southeast St. Cloud died in September from multiple blunt-force injuries. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Billy Rebel Chapman died shortly after 2:00am on September 1st at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Complications of an ischemic right cerebral infarct killed Chapman, the report said. The examiner said blunt-force injuries caused the deadly blood blockage, and the manner of death was homicide. A release from the St. Cloud Police Department said,  in August, officers responded to a medical call that Chapman had fallen. Chapman was transported to St. Cloud Hospital where it was determined he suffered substantial head trauma. He was then taken to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, where he later died. The release said the death is still under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Unit, but no further information is currently available.

–A Pierz man faces charges after fleeing from Stearns County deputies during a traffic stop. The release said a deputy initiated a traffic stop on County Road 17 in Holdingford. During the stop, the deputy learned the driver, 31-year old Aaron Swanson had active felony warrants for controlled substance violations. When the deputy asked Swanson to perform a field sobriety test, Swanson put the car in drive and fled the scene. Deputies followed Swanson for several miles until Swanson struck a squad car. No one was injured during the pursuit. Swanson was arrested and is being held in the Stearns County Jail. He is awaiting court on several charges.

–Shortly before 8:30am Monday the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single vehicle accident on County Road 9, 2.5 miles north of Richmond. The driver, 38-year old Nikki Christen of Avon was injured. Christen was driving southbound on County Road 9 when she crossed into the opposing lane and went into the ditch, striking a utility pole. Christen was wearing her seat belt. Christen was transported to St Cloud Hospital by ambulance and was treated for chest and leg injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

–On Monday the Benton County Sheriff’s Office located a truck that had been reported stolen in March of 2000. Around 2:00pm Sunday the Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a telephone call from an individual who was fishing on Mayhew Lake. The caller reported that they had lowered a camera down through the ice to look for fish and observed what appeared to be a pickup truck submerged in the lake. Deputies responded to the scene and used a camera to look at the submerged pickup truck. The truck was found about 100 yards north of the public access at a point about 25 yards from the west shore of the lake in 12 feet of water. The condition of the pickup truck suggested that it had been submerged for a significant period of time. On Monday divers from the Stearns/Benton Dive Team responded to the scene to search the truck and the area around the truck. The divers found that the truck was empty and the area around the truck did not contain any items of evidentiary value. A recovery effort was made in hopes of retrieving the truck from the lake bottom. This effort was unsuccessful due to the difficulties presented by the relatively thin ice present on the lake. The vehicle will be recovered from the lake in the near future when the conditions permit a retrieval that involves less risk to those involved in the recovery effort.
