–Hundreds took time out of their Sunday to participate in a walk to raise awareness for missing person Marc Welzant. The group gathered in Kiwanis Park in Brainerd taking part in a walk of about 2 miles, retracing the route Welzant is believed to have taken the day he disappeared a year ago yesterday. Welzant, a 47-year-old developmentally disabled adult, left his group home the afternoon on October 26th and last seen at a gas station hours later. Welzant is described as having brown hair, brown eyes and being about 5 feet, 2 inches tall. The gas station video shows Welzant wearing a dark colored jacket and dark colored pants. During Sunday’s walk to raise awareness that Welzant remains missing, prayers were said at Kiwanis Park and again at the Holiday Gas Station. Participants in the walk also paused at the home where Welzant lived. Police are asking residents to thoroughly check their own property and areas in and around Brainerd. Those with information regarding Welzant’s disappearance contact Brainerd Police at (218) 829-2805.

–Douglas and Pope County Sheriff’s officials say they have spoken with the man who was last seen with a missing U of M Morris student. Laura Schwendemann, 18, who has resided in Hancock and Starbuck, was last seen October 14th in Alexandria around 9:30pm. Schwendemann has brown hair, blue eyes, 5’5 and 125 pounds. Authorities say Schwendemann left the gas station with a man she knew in a 1997 black Geo Prism with loud exhaust. Investigators believe they traveled to unknown locations throughout southern Douglas County and northern Pope County during the late evening hours. Authorities were able to speak with the man. According to Sheriff Wolbersen, the man is a focus of the investigation and a “person of interest” in Laura’s disappearance. He says investigators have not received information that would suggest that Laura is being held against her will, or that the teen left by her own decision and is evading being found. Many ground and air searches have been conducted in the 10 days since Schwendemann went missing. The sheriff says more searches will be scheduled if new information is uncovered. Several of those searches have taken place in Orange Township, about 10.5 miles from the Holiday Gas Station. People both in Minnesota and across the country have been keeping their porch light on in support of Schwendeman’s safe return.

Since the hauler will be leaving the emptied bags, please leave a rock or brick nearby for the hauler to place on the emptied bags. They will also pick up brush as long as it’s no longer than 4 feet long or 1” in diameter.  Brush must be bundled together in a manageable fashion.

–In order to make emergency repairs to the water main, water will be shut off today, (October 27th) from approximately 10:30am until approximately 3:00pm in the following locations: On 12th, 13th, and 15th Street Southwest from Highway 27 to 1st Avenue; and also on 14th Street Southwest from Highway 27 to 2nd Avenue.

–Anglers who fish Mille Lacs Lake will be allowed to keep one walleye and five northern pike this winter. The Department of Natural Resources announced regulations for the upcoming ice fishing season for the big lake Monday, a week after it confirmed that there will be a winter walleye season on Mille Lacs. The DNR closed the summer walleye season on the lake in August after anglers exceeded a quota that was set low to protect its struggling walleye population. Anglers will be allowed to keep one walleye between 18 and 20 inches or one longer than 28 inches. Last winter’s limit was two. The size restrictions haven’t changed. If the winter walleye harvest approaches the 5,000-pound cap, the DNR says, catch-and-release will be implemented so angling can continue.
