–The federal government has agreed to assume greater responsibility for prosecuting crimes on the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s reservation, at the request of the tribal government. The Justice Department and Mille Lacs Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin made the announcement Tuesday. Benjamin said in her annual state-of-the-band address that drug dealers and gang members who commit crimes on the reservation can be sent to federal prison, and for longer. Deputy Attorney General Sally Quillian Yates says the decision will strengthen public safety and the criminal justice system serving the Mille Lacs Band. While the federal government already had the power to prosecute drug trafficking on the reservation, the change broadens federal jurisdiction to cover other major crimes such as murder, rape, felony assault and felony child abuse.

–A pickup burst into flames Tuesday morning on Stearns County Road 1, sending its driver escaping into the cold. Firefighters were dispatched to County Road 1 and Minnesota Highway 15 at 7:15am. A truck had started on fire and was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived. The driver of the vehicle had pulled over, escaped uninjured and went to a nearby fast food restaurant to stay warm. The northbound lane of County Road 1 from Highway 15 to Sartell was blocked off for around 30 minutes.

–A neighbor was concerned by 38-year old Lisa Kearney’s threats and anger toward her father before he was found dead in his St. Cloud home last week. Kearney was arrested in Kentucky on January 6th, two days after police found 66-year old Jeffrey Schilling dead inside the home he had lived in with Kearney. A large hammer was propped against a wall near his body, and blood was splattered on the walls and ceiling. When she was arrested, Kearney was in possession of Schilling’s wallet, keys and iPad. A search warrant filed in Stearns County court indicates Kearney had displayed troubling behavior toward her father, who had taken steps to prevent her from stealing from him. The neighbor told police that Kearney was unemployed and never left the house. He told investigators that Schilling was concerned about his daughter’s behavior, that Schilling had seen her using his iPad to attempt to locate her ex-husband and that he took steps to prevent her from stealing his truck. After finding Schilling’s body, authorities found his truck at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. They later arrested Kearney in Louisville, Kentucky.

–Law enforcement agencies in Crow Wing County have been chosen to receive the Department of Public Safety’s Toward Zero Deaths Commissioner’s Award for their outstanding enforcement and education efforts during 2015. Commissioner Dohman and the Office of Traffic Safety will honor the Brainerd Police Department and its 10 partner agencies during a recognition luncheon planned for June 1st. The Commissioner’s Award highlights the exceptional partnership of municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies working together on a highly visible, well-publicized traffic safety enforcement program funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Brainerd Police Department is the lead agency on the TZD Enforcement Grant, and its partner agencies include: Baxter, Breezy Point, Crosby, Crosslake, Cuyuna, Deerwood, Emily, Nisswa, and Pequot Lakes Police Departments along with the Crow Wing County Sherriffs Office. The agencies demonstrate that improving safety on Minnesota roads takes face-to-face outreach and enforcement to influence behaviors. Their efforts include seat belt education, mock car crashes at area high schools, senior driving safety seminars, alcohol server training and high-visibility enforcement. The work focuses on all traffic safety issues with an emphasis on impaired driving, occupant protection, speed and distracted driving.
