NEWS
–Around 6:40pm Monday night the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fire at Herbie’s Bar in Sobieski, located approximately 5 miles southwest of Little Falls. When deputies arrived the south end of the building was fully engulfed in flames along with two vehicles. The Bowlus Fire Department responded and was assisted by the Little Falls, Upsala and Flensburg Fire Departments. Four people were inside the bar when the fire started and everyone was able to escape without injury. There were approximately 70 firefighters present at the scene and the building is considered a total loss. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and will be conducting an investigation.

–Congratulation to 13-year old Jacob Hoheisel (son of Mark Hoheisel and Melissa Bauer) of Pierz for finding the Pierz 125th City Anniversary medallion put on this week by the city of Pierz. Jacob found the medallion around 10:30am Tuesday in between a rock and a fence post that said Family Community Gardens on it. Jacob Hoheisel was searching with his dad when he found the medallion. He will receive $125 in Pierz bucks as his prize. That means the Pierz 125th City Anniversary Medallion Hunt concluded but the Little Falls Dam Festival medallion has not yet been turned in. We will have another clue around 8:25am today on all three Little Falls Radio stations.

–The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office reported they had been called out to three fires earlier this month. On June 5th a chair on a front porch on Front Street in Cushing was on fire. Randall firefighters were called in to extinguish it. On June 6th a grass fire was reported on 200th Street and Highway 10 north of Little Falls, again Randall firefighters were called, and on June 7th a grass fire was reproted on Morrison County Road 23 and Schubert Road. Pierz firefighters were called into assist on this one.

–With summer vacation officially underway, Pierz Community Education is conducting a Safety Camp on Thursday starting at 11:30am in the east Parking lot at Pierz Healy High School. Students age five and up are encouraged to attend the event that starts with a free picnic lunch served at 11:30am. After lunch the children will have an opportunity to learn first hand about fire safety, water safety, hear about our County’s C.I.R.T. team (Critical Incident Response Team) and for the first time ever see the North Memorial Air Care Helicopter land and learn about how this mode of transportation helps to save lives. The Pierz Volunteer Fire Department will have several vehicles on display and talk to the children about what to do in case of a fire. Deputies from the Morrison County Sheriff’s Department will talk about many of the happenings associated with training for the unexpected and how to stay safe on the many lakes and rivers this summer. In addition students from the Minnesota Honor Society will assist with registration, lunch and prizes. There will be door prizes for the youngsters to take home with them. The event is free, and in case of inclement weather listen to the Little Falls Radio stations for cancellation information.

–Auditions will be held Thursday and Friday 6-8pm at the Pierz Healy High School for the Pierz Community Theater performance of Seussical which will be the third and fourth weekend in August.

–A 69-year-old Brainerd woman was injured Tuesday around 1:35pm on Highway 10 near Iris Road when she went off the roadway into the center median striking an underground culvert which caused the vehicle to go back up onto the northbound lanes of Highway 10 resting back in the median. Janet Jones was taken to the hospital with reported non-life threatening injuries.

–A Clear Lake man was injured early Tuesday when the car he was driving hit a deer in Wright County. 65-year-old Allan Larry Zolin was driving on Interstate Highway 94, two miles west of Minnesota Highway 25, when the deer ran onto the road at 5:34am. The Minnesota State Patrol said that Zolin was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with non life threatening injuries that were not life-threatening.

–Minnesota cities, counties and other government entities can apply for matching funds for transportation infrastructure projects that support economic development through MnDOT’s Transportation and Economic Development program and the Department of Employment and Economic Development’s Transportation Economic Development infrastructure program. These are competitive grant programs designed to help meet the state’s transportation and economic development needs by creating and preserving well paying jobs and leveraging private and local investment in transportation infrastructure. Applications and new guidelines are posted on MnDOT’s website and DEED’s website. A total of $18.4 million is available this year for trunk highway eligible project components, and $4.2 million of DEED general obligation bond funding is also available. The funding will be split between projects in Greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities’ seven county metropolitan area. The application deadline is September 15th. Information sessions about the application process will be held in eight locations throughout the state. The information session nearest to us is Thursday from 10:00am-noon at the Baxter MNDOT office.

–The Little Falls School Board meets Thursday at 5:00pm at the Morrison County Government Center Boardroom. Agenda items include an update to the 2017-18 budget, building construction revisions, approval of food service low fund balance, and approval of 2-year EMLF teacher contracts.

–Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson has appointed a veteran officer Jon Lentz to the rank of Chief Deputy.

–There will be a city wide cleanup day in the city of Flensburg this Saturday from 8am-11am at the firehall in Flensburg.
