NEWS
–The Swanville School Distrct held a bond referendum election yesterday. The final vote was 484 votes-yes, 124 votes-no for a total of 608 total votes cast. With the passage of the referendum, Swanville Superintendant Gene Harthan says the school district hopes to use the approximately $120,000 per year that the bond will give the district to help it come out of standard operating debt and begin hiring back some teaching positions that had previously been cut. Another local district that held a bond referendum was the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle school district. Voters in that district narrowly approved that request on a vote of 420 yes to 399 no.

–The Morrison County Department of Public Works wishes to notify the Public of its intention to conduct a controlled burn at Belle Prairie Park. When conditions at the park are appropriate the department will be working with a private contractor to perform the prescribed burn. It is expected that this will occur during the first week of November. The burn will take place mainly in the oak wood lot area of the park. The burn is being conducted to continue to reduce invasive species such as Buckthorn and Prickly Ash. The burn will also eliminate leaf clutter and provide nutrients to the soil promoting the return of the native vegetative species. Belle Prairie Park will be closed when the burn is conducted. Anyone with questions may contact the Morrison County Public Works at 320-632-0121.

–The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a call in regards to an active Anhydrous Ammonia leak from a tanker Monday around 7:00pm in Eden Lake Township. It was determined that a broken seal caused the 6,000 pound tank to begin to leak. Due to the lack of wind, the gas stayed in the area and did not dissipate well. Several people, including a Stearns County Deputy, were exposed to the gas. They were treated at the St. Cloud Hospital for the exposure. The Eden Valley Fire Department was able to get the leak under control, and the spill contained.

–There will be a gathering of interested people in starting a FFA Alumni Chapter in Royalton on Saturday, November 14th at 11:00am. The meeting will be at the Ag shop on the east side of the high school. There will be a hot dog lunch and snacks provided. Anyone interested in supporting the ag education and FFA programs at Royalton High School are encouraged to attend. You do not have to have been a member of FFA to belong to the Alumni Chapter. If you have any questions contact Mr. Skwira at the Royalton High School.

–A St. Cloud man broke a window early Sunday morning and entered the residence of a woman who had an order for protection against him. 23-year-old Connor Dahl was charged Monday with first-degree burglary, misdemeanor domestic assault, interfering with a 911 call and violating an order for protection. Dahl pounded on the window of a residence around 3:00am and shouted at two people inside. One of the occupants was a woman who was granted an order for protection against Dahl in July because of multiple instances of abuse. The two people in the residence locked themselves in the bathroom. Dahl then entered the residence through a window, kicked through the bathroom door and hung up the phone while the occupants called 911. Dahl ultimately fled the residence and attempted to run from police officers when they found him. He was arrested and taken to Stearns County Jail.

–A reminder that the open house to view the new construction projects done at the Pierz High School is tonight from 6:30-8pm. All are welcome to tour the facility and the work that has been done.

–The Minnesota State Patrol has located the vehicle and driver involved in Monday night’s hit and run crash that killed a Princeton woman. Around 10:15pm, a crash occurred between a suspected drunk driver and another motorist along Highway 95 in Springvale Township. Shortly after the crash, the suspected drunk driver stopped his vehicle on Highway 95 near Moon Lake road. As the passenger in the suspected drunk driver’s vehicle, 54-year-old Patricia Wolter, stepped out of the car and was checking for damage, another motorist struck and killed her. A tip to the Minnesota State Patrol led to the recovery of the vehicle and identification of the driver. The driver is being questioned by investigators. Additional information will be posted to the State Patrol media website once available.

–Police are encouraging people to lock their vehicles at all times and to keep all vaulables out of plain site after a rash of thefts from vehicles Halloween and Sunday night in Brainerd, Baxter, Nisswa and Cross Lake in Crow Wing County. Dozens of reports came in to area police departments Saturday and Sunday of vehicles being broken into and items taking. In most cases the vehicles were unlocked in parking lots include two thefts reported Sunday in a church parking lot in Baxter. If you see suspicious activity you are asked to contact your area law enforcement agency.

–The Little Falls City Council met Monday night at City Hall. At the meeting there was an informational meeting and presentation led by zoning administrator Ben Oleson on the new sign ordinance. (For the proposed language of the sign ordinance click here) The feasability report for the Elm Street Improvement project was denied. The new City administrator Jon Rademacher replaced interim administrator Dan Vogt as the Responsible Authority. This position is required by state data practices law. The council also approved the sale of a surplus police vehicle and posted a job opening for a Park Maintenance Worker 1 to replace Charles Volbert who is retiring at the end of the year. The council meets next November 16th.

–Upsala High School will be performing its fall play this Friday and Saturday. 39 Steps is a comedic adaptation of an old Alfred Hitchcock murder mystery. Performances will be at 7:30pm at the high school auditorium in Upsala Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available at the door. $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors.

–Pierz Pioneers will head to Park Center High School Friday at 2:30pm for the state semi-final game against Tri City United at 7pm. You are asked to show your Pioneer Pride Friday during a send off at 2:30 down Main Street in Pierz. Hear the game live Friday on FM94.
