–Human remains have been found in a farm field in central Minnesota not far from where they have been looking for a missing teen. The Douglas County Sheriff’s office says the remains of a woman in her late teens or early 20s were found Monday afternoon by a farmer who was harvesting a field in Orange Township, just east of Alexandria. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office posted on facebook they have reason to believe that they have located Laura Ann Schwendemann, however they are awaiting further information from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office. Although they may have entered into the next phase of the investigation, the case remains open and active. Again, they do not have reason to believe that the general public is in danger and their focus is now why and how this young woman died. They are aggressively pursuing the leads that they have, and believe that they are making active progress in solving this case. The sheriffs office will share further information as the investigation evolves. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct testing to determine the woman’s official identity and cause of death. Authorities say Schwendemann was with a man she knew, but have not elaborated if he is a person of interest or he played in her disappearance.

–A 77-year-old Rice man who was struck by a pickup truck while riding a golf cart on a lakeside road in central Minnesota on a Sunday afternoon has died. Edward J. Ringwelski died Friday, five days after the collision along the western shore of Little Rock Lake in Watab Township, southeast of Rice. The use of golf carts on public roads is illegal in Minnesota except where local jurisdictions pass an overriding ordinance. Deputies were called to the crash scene shortly after 3:00pm on October 18th and determined that Ringwelski had been riding his golf cart south on W. Lake Road, less than 2 miles from his home, where it collided with a pickup truck backing out of a driveway. Emergency responders treated Ringwelski at the scene before he was transported to St. Cloud Hospital with critical injuries. The pickup’s driver, 45-year old James Truwe of Medina, was not hurt. Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck said Tuesday that his office is investigating the crash and intends to send a case to the county attorney’s office for possible charges.

–Motorists can expect overnight lane closures and extra speed patrols on Interstate 94 in Rogers and St. Michael while crews complete cleanup and off-roadway work on the I-94 improvement project that added one lane in each direction to the roadway. While all lanes of I-94 in Rogers and St. Michael were opened to traffic last week, the work zone remains active. Overnight and intermittent daytime non-rush hour lane closures will continue. Overnight lane closures began Monday night and will last through the week. The lane closures and patrols are part of the I-94 Corridors of Commerce project in Rogers and St. Michael.

–Despite a week of having the fewest days suitable for fieldwork in a month, Minnesota farmers continue making progress in the harvest. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in the weekly Minnesota crop report only 5.3 days were suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sunday. That’s the fewest days suitable for fieldwork in four weeks. But Minnesota farmers still were able to harvest almost one-quarter of their corn acreage during the week. The corn harvest for grain is now 81 percent complete, 12 days ahead of last year and almost a week ahead of the five-year average.

–The U. S. Department of Agriculture announced nearly one half of the 1.7 million farms that signed up for either the Agriculture Risk Coverage or Price Loss Coverage programs will receive safety-net payments for the 2014 crop year. The ARC/PLC programs primarily allow producers to continue to produce for the market by making payments on a percentage of historical base production, limiting the impact on production decisions. Nationwide, 96 percent of soybean farms, 91 percent of corn farms, and 66 percent of wheat farms elected the ARC-County coverage option. Ninety-nine percent of long grain rice and peanut farms, and 94 percent of medium grain rice farms elected the PLC option. Overall, 76 percent of participating farm acres are protected by ARC-County, 23 percent by PLC, and 1 percent by ARC-Individual. For data about other crops, as well as state-by-state program election results, final PLC price and payment data, and other program information including frequently asked questions, visit www.fsa.usda.gov/arc-plc.

–Authorities say a student at Kennedy Community School brought a knife into the building Tuesday, but police and school officials are calling it a non-threatening situation and an accident. The eighth-grade student had the knife in a backpack and didn’t realize it was there, according to police and school officials. The student apologized, and the incident is being handled by school administration in accordance with the district’s “rights and responsibilities code of conduct”. Data privacy laws prohibit the district from commenting further at this time about what discipline could come for the student.
