Airline passengers will need more secure driver’s licenses called Real ID starting January 22nd, 2018 if they want to use them as identification at airport checkpoints, the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday. Driver’s licenses will be valid for travel identification in any state until the deadline. A passport could always be used as an alternative form of identification. Still, the license requirement could become a challenge after the deadline for travelers in five states and a territory – Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Washington and American Samoa – that don’t comply with Real ID standards.
