The St. Cloud Fire Department responded to an unusual fire Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were sent after 3:00pm to an area near the intersection of 35th Avenue and Third Street after residents called about a strange odor. A firefighter noticed smoke coming out of 240 35th Ave. S. The basement in that house was severely damaged by a fire that appeared to have started near a futon. Some neighbors told firefighters that they smelled smoke as early as Saturday night. The fire had mostly burned itself out by the time firefighters entered the house. The fire left a smoldering basement, heat and smoke damage to the first level of the house. Nobody was home when firefighters found the fire. There is no damage estimate and there were no injuries. The cause remained under investigation Sunday.
